Getting to know… Saija Mahon

So you know the names of the speakers, their areas of expertise and what they’ll be speaking about at Ambition, but we think it’d be nice to get to know them a bit better. So we sent our intrepid reporter out with a notebook and pen to ask some searching questions that reveal the personalities behind the successful business people. Here’s what Saija had to say:

What was the best business advice ever given to you?

Start straight away; don’t delay as you will never be truly ‘ready’ to go into business unless you just begin your journey. It’s amazing how many things you can learn and figure out along the way.

What’s the weirdest job you’ve ever done?

I wouldn’t say I’ve ever had a ‘weird’ job; however I’ve certainly done a lot of different jobs in my life! I’ve picked strawberries, sold ice-cream, cleaned offices, worked in a bar. All of those roles have taught me important lessons. I’ve also been lucky to meet new people and friends along the way.

What’s been your proudest business moment so far?

There are many of course; I’m most proud of having offices and operations in the UK, Finland and Tallinn Estonia.

Who do you turn to for business advice?

I have quite a few sources of support when it comes to business – entrepreneur colleagues, certain websites and forums such as:

I also network actively – I would definitely recommend other business people find relevant networking events and attend them on a regular basis.

In your opinion, why is East Herts such a great place to do business?

I love the community spirit and flourishing business community in East Herts. Businesses support each other and truly find it important to work with local partners, collaborators and clients.

Which of your awards are you proudest of and why?

Best employer. I think it speaks for itself. I’m proud to have been able to create a working environment where people are happy and can excel.

What would you say is your personal digital superpower?

Excel sheets.

If you could only advise three no cost/low cost tactics to a small business to improve their digital marketing – what would they be?

  1. Get your basic SEO optimisations in place on your website. This applies to new and already established businesses. It’s incredible how these elements are still very much missed and even ignored.
  2. Be present in relevant social media channels. They don’t cost anything to set up.
  3. Start blogging. It doesn’t cost anything but your time, but it will help with SEO optimisation and Google rankings.

Which social media platform is your personal favourite and why?

Instagram at the moment. I find the channel less cluttered than Facebook, for example, and because of its visual nature, it’s very enticing.

Do you have a personal mantra?

Yes. If you firmly believe in your vision and the goals you want to achieve, you will achieve them. If you put your mind to it, anything is possible.

And on a personal note…

Who would be the guests at your perfect dinner party?

  • Phil Collins
  • Barack Obama
  • Oprah Winfrey
  • Sandra Bullock
  • Sheryl Sandberg
  • Annie Mac

What makes you laugh?

So many things! People with good sense of humour, comedy, Friends, silly memes and, of course, funny cat videos!

What’s your favourite food?

Again, there are vast amounts of wonderful food in this world. I especially love Spanish, Mexican and Italian food.
